Infant Baptism
The Sacrament of Baptism is often called “The door of the Church,” because it is the first of the seven sacraments not only in time (since most Catholics receive it as infants) but in priority, since the reception of the other sacraments depends on it.
Please submit the online Baptism application form below.
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19)
Baptism is the first of the Sacraments of Initiation and marks the beginning of a child's lifelong journey of faith. Through Baptism, your child becomes a member of the Catholic Church and receives the gift of God's grace.
We are delighted to accompany families as they prepare for this special occasion.
To request Baptism:
-
At least one parent must be a baptised Catholic.
-
Families normally live within the parish boundaries or regularly worship at Sacred Heart Church. If you belong to another parish, you will need permission from your Parish Priest.
-
Parents are expected to be committed to bringing their child up in the Catholic faith through regular participation in Sunday Mass.
Preparation
Parents are required to attend a Baptism preparation session before the celebration of the Sacrament. This provides an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of Baptism and the responsibilities of parents and godparents.
Godparents
The child must have at least one godparent, who:
-
is a baptised Catholic
-
is at least 16 years old
-
Has received Confirmation, and Holy Communion
-
practises the Catholic faith
A baptised Christian from another denomination may act as a Christian Witness alongside a Catholic godparent.
Offering
The Sacrament of Baptism is a gift freely given by the Church, and there is no charge.
If you are able, a voluntary donation towards the upkeep of the church and the work of the parish is greatly appreciated. A £50 donation, or any amount you are able to give, will help us continue serving our parish community.
How to apply
To begin the process, please complete the Baptism application form online by clicking the tab above and provide the requested documents. The parish office will contact you approximately one week before the course begins to invite you to attend.
